In order to accurately calculate revenues from oil and gas production for our clients, we subscribe to a number of monthly price bulletins. These documents serve as a guide for oil and gas purchasers and operators.

Oil And Gas Monthly Price Bulletins
Monthly price bulletins are published prices from companies, agencies, and industry trackers that list the posted prices for crude oil and refined products on a monthly basis. Essentially, they track what a barrel of oil is worth on any given day and on a monthly average.

Benchmark Systems
There are different types of bulletins that are used to price crude oil.

NYMEX (New York Mercantile Exchange): A futures market benchmark, the NYMEX bases pricing on supply, demand, and cost.

Argus Media: A reporting agency (not a trade exchange), Argus bases its oil and gas prices on physical markets, real barrels traded, spot/current pricing, and specific locations.

Platts: A reporting agency (not a trade exchange), Platts assesses final prices based on the price at market close, and it tracks some of the most important global crude oil benchmarks.

What Is Included In An Oil And Gas Price Bulletin
Typically, an oil and gas price bulletin will include:

  • effective date
  • dollar amount per barrel
  • location/posting area
  • gravity/quality of the crude oil
  • applicable deductions and charges

How Monthly Oil And Gas Price Bulletins Impact Division Of Interest
The monthly price bulletins play a key role in determining division order payments, because they set the price per unit of oil. Combine that with how much oil was sold, and you have the gross revenue (price x volume) for a month.
